European Clubhouse Conference in Reykjavik from April 28th to May 1st 2012
There are over 400 „Fountain House“ Clubhouses around the world, there of 80 in Europe – the biggest number being in the nordic countries. The European Clubhouse Conference, which is held biannually, will be held at Grand Hotel in Reykjavik from April 28th to May 1st this year.
Geysir Clubhouse in Reykjavík offers work-related rehabilitation for individuals with mental illness. The Club works in accordance with the „Fountain House“ ideology which strives to activate its members by using the work-ordered day, the members are involved at their own precondition and members and staff are equal.
Research at the University of Massachusett´s has stablished that people attending a „Fountain House“ clubhouse are far more likely to be socially active - having a job and/or studying than those who are not.
The clubhouse idelology is almost 70 years old and acknowledged as an efficient method for rehabilitating the mentally ill. The clubhouse in Iceland has operated for 12 years, the members are around 400 with a daily attendance of about 30 individuals that all benefit from this work-related rehabilitation, performing useful jobs pertaining to the operation of the club. The only requirement for membership is a story of mental illness. The membership is free and attendance is up to the member.
